What is a heavyweight hoodie? 380 GSM vs 350 GSM explained

"Heavyweight" gets used a lot. Here is what it actually means, and how to choose between the two weights we make.

What GSM means

GSM stands for grams per square meter. It measures how much a fabric weighs over a fixed area, so a higher number means thicker, denser cloth. In a hoodie, a higher GSM generally means more structure, more warmth, and a heavier drape.

Our two weights

  • 380 GSM heavyweight (85% cotton, 15% polyester): structured and substantial, with a clean drape that holds its shape wash after wash. This is the one for a boxy, premium look.
  • 350 GSM fleece (42% cotton, 53% polyester, 5% other fibers): thick with a soft fleece interior and a little stretch. This is the one for cozy, loose, all-day comfort.

Which should you pick?

Pick the 380 GSM heavyweight if you want structure and a hoodie that looks sharp over a tee. Pick the 350 GSM fleece if you want the softest feel and a relaxed, slouchy fit. Both are cut oversized with drop shoulders, so you can size to your normal size for the intended look.

How to tell if a hoodie is really heavyweight

  • Check that the listing states the GSM or ounce weight, not just the word heavyweight.
  • Look at the cuffs and hem: thick ribbing that springs back is a good sign.
  • Hold it up to the light: dense fabric should not look thin or see-through.
